Safe Communities
OAK Street Initiative believes violence in communities is fed by joblessness, hopelessness, poverty, discrimination, and the criminalization of drugs of abuse. Police reform, community investment in education, mental health services, child care, and welfare services, and programs designed to reduce gun violence are among OSI’s priorities. Investment in free and affordable child care services, substance abuse rehabilitation, training, and education are essential steps in reducing violence in our communities. Treating people with addictions with respect, compassion, and appropriate medical care is a more successful strategy than incarceration and the use of excessive force.
